How did I cope with the fear before the competition?

First of all, let me tell you that rolling (free sparring) at the gym and competing is TOTALLY different. At the gym is much more relaxing and you get to roll with your gym buddy so there is not much pressure. On the other hand, when you compete in a big competition, everyone will be watching you. Every moves you make, all the eyes are on you. Of course, it’s a lot of pressure, even a black belt still gets nervous. But once you know how to deal with it, you will feel much more ready for any competition whether it’s a big one or local one.

Stretching

Stretching is a perfect warm-up for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu because in BJJ you need to move a lot and stretching helps you with flexibility and mobility and it is also relaxing as well.

Don’t overeat

Before the competition you shouldn’t eat something heavy because trust me it’s not a good idea, I have seen some guy threw up on the mat during the competition before. Bring some light snacks such as banana or nuts.

Listen to your coach

BJJ is basically a human chess so you need to think fast how are you going to defend the moves but a good coach will be there by the mat to coach you through the match. So don’t worry, master has got your back.

Reading

Bring your favorite book to read cause you will pretty much spend a whole day there. Personally, reading helps me whenever I get so nervous at the competition. I brought a book called 'The Shining' by Stephen King, nothing can scare me!

Don’t do high-intensity before you compete

It’s such a bad idea to do some intense cardio workout the day before the tournament, let your body recover, it’s better to focus on your favorite movements instead.

Learning is greater than winning

Whether you win or lose, you will definitely gain more confidence and experience. There is no losing in BJJ, you either win or you learn. Learn from the mistakes you made, it will help you become better. What I learned is that I shouldn't be panic and I need to work on my side control escape.
