People’s reactions when I told them ‘I do BJJ’

I have always been getting the funniest reactions whenever I told Thai people that I do Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Of course, BJJ is not so common in Thailand. I usually get the same reactions from Thai people since they have no idea what it is. Thai people commonly mistaken BJJ as Karate, they often go ‘Oh hey it’s like Karate right?!’ and they would do the Kungfu hand gesture but NO IT IS NOT. Karate, Kung Fu, or Taekwondo are completely different from BJJ. One of the things that people who don’t do BJJ wouldn’t know would be the common rule that punching and kicking is prohibited.

Friends would come up to me and try to fight with me, for fun though. They just wanted to see if I could beat them up or defend their chokes especially the guys. Most of the times I got out of their chokes, which makes me happy that after all these years of training it actually works in real life! After friends noticing that I started losing weight ever since I have done BJJ, they seemed pretty interested and two of the girls actually came to try at my gym once and they never came back again. I wonder why.

Being the only girl who does BJJ in the class is like being Chuck Norris, people think that I’m SUPER STRONG and undefeated but it’s nothing like that at all. BJJ is a good workout and self-defense. It also makes you strong but it’s not like I can lift up a car kind of strong but it’s different kind of strong. Comparing from when I first started, I feel much more stronger than I was. I’m proud to say that BJJ makes me feel more confident about myself, I feel much better physically and mentally.

“The greatest feeling pleasure in life is doing what people say you cannot do.”
